Portrait Session with Sidney Key

Portrait Session with Sidney

Sidney Key was named after her dad’s favorite TV show character. Sidney likes taking photos and wants to learn how to take better ones, which is why she’s taking this class. The best 2 words that describe her are weird and creative. If she could change one thing about herself, she would like to become more organized. In ten years, Sydney will either be in a band or in college with a job. Sidney can be found on her phone or in her room playing drums. Her biggest fear is being in the water with animals. Her favorite restaurant is Sticks. Her favorite animal is a flamingo and she would like to visit Greece someday.

Sketchbook Cover and Personal Reflection

    1. How did you take the photograph?

I took the landscape pictures on my phone and the picture of me was taken by a professional digital camera. All the landscape pictures were taken in the early morning around my house and backyard.

2.Why is this photo good (compositional standpoint)?

I think they are a good set of photos because some parts are completely dark while others are bursting with color, which, I believe, adds a sense of energy to the composition. There is a good sense of contrast between different circles and even within some of them and there is an abundance of vibrancy.

3.Why do you value this photograph? (sentimental standpoint)

I value these photographs because I love the scenery and landscape of the area near my house in morning. It's just really refreshing to see after living in a time period where all you see are computer, TV, and phone screens everywhere. It just reminds me that there is so much more to see in the world.

   4. What is your theme? How did you showcase your identity?

The theme of my sketchbook cover is that "where there is darkness, there is light.". It goes from darkest to lightest with pieces of me in different parts of the sketchbook. I showcased my identity within my theme. It just reminds me that whenever I feel down or am having a bad day ( the dark side), there will always be ways to make it better and happier(the light side). I just have to allow myself to let it get better and not get stuck on the past.

5.How do the other images relate to your theme?

They all play a part in my dark vs. light theme. They are what makes the dark side or the light side.

6.Describe how you used the chosen principle of design.

I mainly used repetition on my sketchbook cover. The circles are repeated over and over again to create a sense of rhythm within the work. You could even say I incorporated contrast within this cover by playing around with the lights and darks of in each of the many circles.

My Best Photo

My Best Photo

I took this photo while I was at the beach in Ocean City, Maryland. I love the beach so much so I was ecstatic when this photo came out well. I really love how the water meets the sand in a bubbly foam. It's special to me because I took it by myself and it makes me feel at one with the beach and its nature. It also captures a bittersweet moment, because at this moment, while I was taking this amazing photo, my favorite sunglasses of all time fell off from where they were hooked onto my shirt and it disappeared into the ocean forever. Overall, I think the qualities of a good photograph are a good story, proper lighting, and a good focus on the picture. If a photo has these qualities, it is bound to be amazing.

What Makes a "good" photograph

My group's list of elements that make a good photograph

  • focus
  • balance
  • backstory
  • contrast
  • vibrancy
  • non-distortion
  • good lighting
  • good shadowing

Points taken from famous photographers

The main three qualities that I thought were very important are intriguing subject matter, proper lighting, and the ability to evoke emotion. This is what sets one picture apart from the rest, especially when someone is scrolling through a bunch of pictures. If you have these qualities in a picture, then the person will get to your picture and stop. Because you have these qualities in a photo, people can’t help but look at it in awe and take in all the features. If everybody takes the same type of picture, then the matter in it will be less interesting to view. If there isn’t proper lighting, then the image may not be seen as clearly. If it doesn’t make people feel a certain way inside, then they will become indifferent to the photo and keep scrolling. Overall, I believe that if you have all three of these elements in a photograph, then you definitely have an amazing photo.
